04 / Size Guide

What Size Fan Guard Do I Need?

Fan guard size follows fan frame size, not blade size. Here is how to measure and match across our GM, GS, and GD series.

  1. 01

Round fans — measure frame outer diameter

For axial fans with a round frame, measure the outer diameter of the fan housing. This matches the GM series model number directly. A GM120 fits a fan with a 120mm nominal frame. Then check the mounting dimensions in the spec table.

  2. 02

Square fans — measure frame outer edge

For square fans, measure the outer edge length of the fan frame. An 80mm square fan takes a GS80 or GD80 guard. The guard frame (A dimension) can be slightly larger than the fan, and the fan opening (B dimension) will be smaller than the frame edge. That gap is normal.

  3. 03

    Check mounting hole center distance

Size alone doesn't confirm fit. The mounting hole center distance on the guard must match the fan or panel. GM guards use four wire legs at fixed positions. GS guards use Ø5.5mm through-holes with 5.6mm edge clearance; for GD, confirm the mounting dimensions from the model drawing. Check both.

  4. 04

    Confirm depth clearance

For GM guards, E dimension is the overall depth including legs. Make sure there is enough clearance between the guard and any panel or structure behind the fan. Especially relevant on larger sizes. GM280 runs 257mm deep.

05 / Types of Fan Guards

Four Guard Types. Different Jobs.

The right type depends on environment, not just size. A wire fan guard vs plastic fan guard isn't just a material preference. Outdoor condensers, dusty cabinets, and clean electronics enclosures all have different answers. Here is how our four types break down.

GM Series

Metal Wire Fan Guard — Round

Concentric ring construction in low-carbon steel wire, available in bright nickel or powder coat black. This is the standard choice for exposed axial fans in HVAC units, cold room condensers, and industrial extraction. The round fan guard also acts as a finger guard. Check the ring spacing against the safety standard that applies to your equipment; ring spacing drawings are available on request. Typical sizes run from 40mm to 280mm across eight standard models.

Pros

Low airflow restriction, CE certified, durable outdoors

Cons

No dust filtration, not for corrosive environments

Best for

HVAC, condensers, industrial fans, outdoor use

GS Series

ABS Plastic Fan Guard — Square Frame

Square frame fan guard in flame-resistant ABS, in black or RAL 7035 light grey. Designed for 80mm, 92mm, and 120mm fans — the sizes you see most often in PC cooling, server rack ventilation, and compact electronics enclosures. Lightweight and corrosion-free. The mounting holes line up with standard fan hole spacing, so fitting is straightforward. Keep it away from high heat and chemical exposure; flame-resistant does not mean heat-proof.

Pros

No corrosion, lightweight, clean look, two colors

Cons

Limited size range, not for heat or chemical exposure

Best for

PC cooling, electronics enclosures, server racks

GD Series

Fan Guard with Filter Pad — Dustproof

Square frame ABS with a replaceable nylon fiber filter pad built in. IP40 rated, 89% dust removal. This one covers both jobs: blade protection and dust control. It makes sense when the fan is pulling air into a cabinet that sits in a workshop, warehouse, or any space with airborne debris. The filter pad pulls out for cleaning or swapping. Rated for indoor use between -10°C and +55°C. Thirteen standard sizes from 40mm to 200mm.

Pros

IP40, 89% dust removal, replaceable filter, wide size range

Cons

More airflow resistance, indoor only, needs regular pad checks

Best for

Dusty environments, electrical cabinets, workshops

Custom / OEM

Stainless Steel Fan Guard — Corrosion Resistant

For applications where plated steel won't last: washdown environments, coastal installations, chemical processing areas, food production. A fan guard corrosion resistant to those conditions needs stainless steel or galvanized material, not standard nickel plating. We make these to order: round, square, or non-standard shapes, with custom wire gauge, mounting pattern, and surface treatment. Lead time is typically 3 to 5 weeks from drawing approval.

Pros

Long service life, handles harsh and corrosive environments

Cons

OEM order only, 3 to 5 week lead time, MOQ applies

Best for

Washdown, coastal, chemical, food production

06 / Applications

Where Our Fan Guards Are Used

From 40mm PC cooling fans to 280mm industrial axial fans, here is how each series maps to real applications.

Metal wire fan guards fitted on square cooling fans in a server chassis

Electronics Cooling

PC Case & Server Fan Guard

80mm, 92mm, and 120mm square guards are the standard fit for PC case fans, server rack ventilation, and compact electronics enclosures. The GS series screws straight onto standard fan mounting holes and comes in grey or black to match most equipment finishes. For dusty server rooms, the GD filter pad version keeps debris out without rerouting airflow.

GS Series · GD Series

GM metal wire fan guard fitted on an outdoor condenser axial fan

Refrigeration

Condenser Fan Guard & Cold Room Units

Outdoor condenser units and cold room evaporator fans need a guard that handles low temperatures and outdoor exposure. GM series wire guards are the standard choice here. The low-carbon steel wire handles the thermal cycling, and the nickel chrome finish manages moisture better than bare steel. For the fan itself in these applications, see our AC external rotor motor fans which are commonly paired with GM guards on condenser decks.

GM Series — outdoor fan guard

GD dustproof fan guard with filter pad mounted on an electrical cabinet

Electrical

Electrical Enclosure Fan Guard

Control panels and electrical cabinets in workshops or factory floors pull in dusty air with every ventilation cycle. A plain wire guard protects the fan blades but does nothing for the dust. The GD series handles both. The ABS frame mounts to standard panel cutouts, the filter pad catches airborne particles before they reach internal components, and the pad pulls out for cleaning without tools.

GD Series · GS Series

HVAC

Fan Guard for Air Handling Units

Air handling units run large-diameter axial fans in spaces where maintenance access is routine. A GM series metal wire fan guard on the inlet and outlet keeps service engineers clear of the blades while adding relatively little airflow resistance. Nickel chrome finish holds up to the humidity levels typical in AHU plantrooms. Sizes from GM120 to GM280 cover the fan diameters most commonly used in commercial HVAC builds.

GM Series — 120mm to 280mm

Industrial

Industrial Fan Guard — Extraction & Ventilation

Large exposed axial fans run on extraction systems, fume hoods, and factory ventilation walls. For U.S. workplaces, OSHA 1910.212(a)(5) requires fan blades less than 7 ft above the floor or working level to be guarded, with openings no larger than 1/2 inch. GM220 and GM280 guards cover the blade diameters typical in these installations. Check the ring opening size against that limit for your installation. The guards use a four-leg mounting system.

GM Series — GM220 / GM280

Medical

Medical Equipment Fan Guard

Medical devices and diagnostic equipment need clean-looking components that are easy to wipe down and don't create contamination risks. GS series plastic guards in RAL 7035 light grey fit that brief. The smooth ABS surface is easy to wipe clean, and the countersunk mounting holes keep screw heads flush.

GS Series — light grey

07 / Selection Guide

How to Choose the Right Fan Guard

Three questions narrow it down fast: what size is the fan, what environment does it run in, and how does it mount? Here is how those questions map to our GM, GS, and GD series.

  1. 01

    Confirm the fan size first

Match the guard to the fan frame outer diameter, not the blade. A 120mm fan takes a 120 model (GM120, GS120 or GD120); check the spec table for the exact dimensions. Check the size chart above if you are unsure how to select fan guard size. Frame size and blade size are not the same thing.

  2. 02

    Pick the series by environment

Environment is the real decision. Outdoor condenser, dusty cabinet, clean enclosure, and high-temperature extraction all point to different series. Use the decision table below. If metal or plastic fan guard is the question, the environment usually answers it.

  3. 03

Confirm the fan guard installation method

GM series mounts with four wire legs and screws through the fan frame or panel. GS and GD screw onto standard mounting holes. If neither suits the panel design, custom mounting patterns are available on OEM orders. Check the right panel for all three options.

08 / About Fan Guards

What Is a Fan Guard Grill?

A fan guard grill is a protective cover fitted over the inlet or outlet of an axial fan. Its job is straightforward: stop fingers, tools, and loose debris from reaching the rotating blades, and stop the blades from throwing debris outward. Most are made from steel wire or ABS plastic. Some include a filter pad to block airborne dust at the same time.

Why use a fan guard on a fan? In most industrial and commercial settings you don't have a choice. EU machinery rules call for guards where exposed moving parts present a contact risk. But even in applications where a guard isn't strictly mandated, it protects the fan motor from foreign objects and extends service life. Fan guard compliance is cheaper than a replacement motor.

  • Fan Guard Safety

Prevents accidental finger or hand contact with spinning blades. EU machinery requirements call for guarding where moving parts present a contact risk.

  • Physical Protection

Stops cables, fasteners, and loose debris from being drawn into the fan. One blocked cable can write off an impeller. A guard costs a fraction of that.

  • Compliance

Is a fan guard required? Where exposed moving parts present a contact risk, check the applicable machinery safety requirements and select a suitable guard. Check the guard openings against EN ISO 13857 safe-distance requirements early in the design stage, not after the enclosure is built.

  • Airflow

Wire mesh guards add relatively little airflow resistance. Filter pad guards do add some back-pressure, but if your enclosure is pulling in dusty air anyway, the trade-off is usually worth it.

Custom Fan Guards Made to Your Spec

Standard sizes cover most projects. When they don't, we build to your drawing. That means the diameter, mounting pattern, wire gauge, surface finish. Anything that doesn't fit a stock model gets made from scratch. Most orders are out the door in 3 to 5 weeks from sample sign-off.

  • Non-Standard Diameters

140mm, 160mm and 250mm are examples of non-standard sizes — none of those have a stock equivalent. We can review non-standard diameters from your drawing or sample, round or square frame, concentric ring or straight bar.

  • Custom Mounting Patterns

Four-hole, six-hole, bracket mount, or integrated clip. If your panel doesn't match standard 5.6mm edge clearance or the four-leg wire pattern, we adjust the tooling.

  • Material and Finish Options

Standard is low-carbon steel, bright nickel or powder coat black. Coastal and washdown installs usually need stainless steel. Outdoor structural work often goes galvanized. ABS plastic frames can be ordered in any RAL color.

  • Wire Gauge and Ring Spacing

High-vibration installs need heavier wire. Tighter ring spacing is sometimes required to hit CE contact-probe limits on smaller fans. Both get confirmed against the standard before we cut anything.

  • Branding and Packaging

Logo stamping on the wire center hub, custom color ABS frames, printed carton labeling, white-label packaging. Most branding options kick in at 500 pieces; some start lower. Ask at quote stage.

11 / FAQ

Common Questions About Our Fan Guards

What is the difference between the GM, GS, and GD series?

GM is round steel wire, built for outdoor condensers, HVAC units, and anything running hot. GS is a square ABS plastic frame: lightweight, clean-looking, mounts with screws through standard fan mounting holes. GD is basically GS with a replaceable nylon filter pad built in. That one is for cabinets in dusty workshops where a plain guard doesn't cut it. Environment is what drives the choice.

How do I know what size fan guard I need?

Measure the outside of the fan housing, not the blade. A fan labelled 120mm has a 120mm frame edge — so GM120, GS120, or GD120 is the match. Blades are always smaller than the frame, which is where most sizing mistakes happen. When in doubt, measure before ordering rather than guessing from the spec sheet.

Do your fan guards meet CE safety requirements?

Our fan guards are CE certified. GM guards are designed as finger guards, and GS and GD plastic guards cover standard fan openings. Opening limits depend on the standard and the installation, so check the guard against the standard that applies to your equipment; ring spacing drawings are available on request.

Can the GD filter pad be cleaned and reused?

The nylon fiber pad pulls out without tools. Light dust wipes off with a cloth or compressed air. Heavily clogged pads are better swapped out. Once the fibers compact, airflow restriction climbs and dust removal drops off. Replacement pads are available separately. How often you check depends on the environment; a workshop running all day is a different situation from a server room.

What temperature range does each series handle?

GS and GD plastic guards are rated between -10°C and +55°C. Past that, ABS softens and the frame loses shape. GM wire guards do not have that ABS limit, which is why condensers and extraction systems typically use them. If the installation runs above 55°C, use the metal GM series.

How does the GM series mount to a fan?

Four wire legs pass through the fan frame mounting holes and fasten with nuts or self-tapping screws on the other side. Standard four-hole bolt patterns on round axial fans are what this system is designed around. Non-standard hole spacing does come up. Stock leg positions are fixed, but OEM orders can be adjusted to match whatever pattern the panel uses.

Are GS and GD guards interchangeable on the same fan?

Often, but check the frame first. GS80 and GD80 both fit 80mm fans, but the GD80 frame is larger (87mm vs 80mm) and deeper (10mm vs 7mm) because of the filter pad. Check the cutout and the clearance behind the fan before swapping one for the other.

Do you supply fan guards for 140mm fans?

No 140mm stock model in the current range. GM150 and GD150 are the closest options. Some customers run these on 140mm fans and accept a small gap at the frame edge; whether that works depends on the mounting setup. For a proper fit with no compromise, a custom OEM order is the right route. Lead time is 3 to 5 weeks from drawing approval.

What is the minimum order quantity?

No minimum on stock models — one piece is fine for testing or sampling. Custom OEM is a different story: minimum order is 500 pieces regardless of type. If you're ordering multiple stock models and want them consolidated into one shipment, that's straightforward to arrange.

Can you do stainless steel fan guards for coastal or washdown use?

Not from stock, but yes. Standard GM guards are low-carbon steel with nickel chrome — fine for most outdoor exposure, not built for salt spray or regular washdown. Coastal installs and food production lines are where that finish starts to fail. We make stainless steel guards to order; lead time is 3 to 5 weeks. A fan model number or basic drawing is enough to get a quote started.
